Materials Test Engineer
Mechanical Engineer II
NASA Glenn Research Center
Cleveland, Ohio

This position provides support for the Environmental Effects and Coatings Branch in the Materials and Structures Division at NASA Glenn Research Center.  The branch conducts fundamental and applied research and technology development in a wide range of aerospace applications involving exposures to harsh environments including high temperature and chemically active aircraft and rocket engines, vacuum and radiation exposures in Earth orbit and interplanetary space, dust and radiation exposures on lunar and planetary surfaces.

Specific job duties include the following:
•    Perform experimental system set-up and execute both furnace-based and more complex rig testing of research material specimens. Test specimens include metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites.
•    Generating a comprehensive environmental durability model for high temperature Environmental Barrier Coatings for Ceramic Matrix Composites that is experimentally validated.
•    Extensive extreme environments testing of materials including air & steam oxidation, recession, burner rig, laser, impact, and erosion testing.
•    Buildup and run tests, analyze data, report findings, and characterize the exposed samples.
•    Assist in coating fabrication working in Plasma Spray Physical Vapor Deposition and slurry deposition labs.

Desired Skills and Traits:

Seeking a candidate with strong mechanical aptitude, laboratory skills, and training and work experience in the following areas:
•    Materials processing, particularly the development and implementation of advanced ceramic processing approaches.
•    Materials characterization, specifically, experience with standard laboratory characterization techniques including TGA/DTA, viscosity, porosity, and dilatometry, scanning electron microscopy and electron dispersive spectroscopy.
•    High temperature materials testing, including design and fabrication of specialized equipment to conduct long-term durability tests.   
•    Knowledge in development and operation of data acquisition and controls.  

Specifically:
a)    Materials testing in harsh environments including test specification, test setup, test operations and post-test analysis and reporting.  
b)    Possess specialized skills in safe and effective use of high temperature systems including furnaces, jet fuel burner rigs, high power lasers, etc.  
c)    Possess specialized skills in data acquisition systems related to conducting testing of materials in high temperature environments. 
d)    Possess specialized skills in the development and implementation of fixturing of test articles for conducting testing of materials in high temperature environments. 

Other Desired Skills:

•    Attention to detail.
•    Experience with MS Office applications for data analysis and reporting.

Education/Experience:

Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology degree with the following experience:
•    Master's degree and 0 to 3 years of experience
•    Bachelor's degree and 2 to 5 years of experience 

Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
